It seems that the definition of AI has shifted thanks to the marvellous marketing schemes. At least we got proper term now, hopefully, unless the goal moving happens again: we used to fantasize about AI, now we will fantasize about AGI. Gotta align harder now.

Although looking at the general public fight the chatbots is entertaining, we are riding the hype train all gas no brakes. Or whatever brakes run on.

The two popular postures seem to be roon vs Grady, let me illustrate if you don’t follow prolific Twitter (researchers and/or engineers) shitposters:

@simonkalouche Apparently, you’ve never built really complex software. So, as to your point: no.

I gotta agree with Grady Booch but then again what the fuck do I know, however a well known Vim shill and engineer at Netlix can sum up all the tools that are about to become available:

Over the last 6 months all the worst bugs, including the one that took me 2.5 days to track down (just figured it out) can be directly tied to copilot there is a way you use copilot that is awesome and there is a way you use copilot that is terrifying

Copilot is the AI-assistant that basically generates code for you, it’s very easy to have a glance at the code it generates and think it will work fine, then get the next prompt and the next and.. you end up having no clue where the real problem is because you grew complacent, trusted the tool too much and now you are deep down in shit.

I’m talking from experience, I’ve had copilot from the beta. You will be able to output an insane amount of code, however will it be good? Well, you will have to check!

@ThePrimeagen I had a similar experience, it can definitely be useful but you have to check everything and if you have to check everything what's the point? copilot definitely has its uses but it feels like people overestimate it all the time

ChatGPT and Copilot are definitely useful and helpful but

you will have to go beyond LGTM on your PR reviews which ironically might be more work. The time will tell.

However what makes me concerned is how it will affect other areas of our lives. Stable Diffusion already disrupted its market, and now you have people writing AI-generated books and all kinds of content. Blog sites will allow you to use their assistant to generate content for your blog post, which of course correct all the spelling and errors. Something that we already have with tools like Grammarly or even Gmail, that provides automatic auto-completion and replies. It makes your life easier, right?

You get a good suggestion, a nice auto-reply, the text makes sense, you grow complacent and end up with zero thoughts of your own. But perhaps that’s what people want?

If you already know anything about SEO, how marketing firms work or anything about the ‘Dead-Internet Theory’ (not the conspiracy part, I mean, sure, why not) then you should know the internet is about to get even worse and now you will have to put a disclaimer to say this text/picture/song was ‘hand-written’ or ‘human-made’ but if you use an auto-corrector that changes not only your words but the structure of your phrases then was it really, where’s the line?
Or is AI just a tool, here comes prompt engineering? heh.

However amid all the societal decay we still got it.
